How We Began

The idea for Marietta Pops Orchestra, formerly Symphony on the Square began in the spring of 2010.  Dr. Paul Hill noticed that there was an abundance of community choruses and even a fair showing of community bands, but a community symphony-style orchestra associated with the artistically rich Marietta area was lacking. As the Director/Minister of Worship Arts at First Baptist Church Marietta, he decided to pursue establishing a mixed orchestra (strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion). To do so, he began putting up posters on the windows of businesses surrounding the downtown Marietta square area and business cards were distributed to explore the possibility of starting an orchestra that would be based and closely associated with Marietta. The response was tremendous and on April 12, 2010, Symphony on the Square was born and has been entertaining our city ever since. In 2018 the Board of Directors elected to rename Symphony on the Square to Marietta Pops Orchestra. The orchestra rehearses at and uses the percussion and music equipment generously provided by First Baptist Church Marietta.
